5 ways you can support local businesses

There is no doubt that we are currently going through an unprecedented time that is proving challenging for so many people, especially those who run local small businesses. From your favourite Italian restaurant to your go-to gift shop, local businesses are trying to find ways to navigate these times so they can continue to contribute to our community. We know you all want to find ways to help during this time and the easiest way you can is to make thoughtful decisions about where your money goes and choose to keep it here in our local economy. That’s why this month we’re highlighting 5 ways you can support local.

  1. Let’s start with the easiest and most satisfying of all! Get take out from your favourite restaurant. There has never been a better excuse than this to eat out. Skip the chain restaurants and think of the smaller, locally run favourites that are working hard to stay above water. It’s people like you who can make the difference between a restaurant staying in business or shutting forever…

  2. Support your favourite businesses on social media. Is your favourite shop having a sale? Share the post with your friends. Join contests and tag other people. Share a story when you purchase their products online or visit their shop (with a mask on, of course).

  3. Purchase gift certificates. This helps companies stay afloat during these times when capacity in their shops, salons and restaurants are at half what they were previously. You know you are going to use their services or buy their goods in the future, so why not just pre-purchase it so you can lend a hand now?

  4. Purchase local produce and groceries. It’s so easy to just grab whatever apples are right in front of you but take an extra minute to check the label and support local suppliers. The same goes for other non-perishable items. The more we can keep giving back to our own community, the stronger we become.

  5. Go visit your local business owner and show your support. Grab your mask and hand sanitizer and pop by their shop to say hello. Tell them how much their services mean to you and how much you missed them. It’s important to keep each other motivated so we can all push through this and come back stronger than ever.

On behalf of all of us at El Barbero we want to thank everyone who showed their support for us over these past few months. It has been challenging, but knowing that we are so valued in this community means the world to us.

We can’t wait to see you in the shop soon.
